The ''disarmed'' ayurvedic DOCTOR .

“Ayurveda owes its call not to selfish goals or worldly pleasure, but to compassion for fellow beings. In seeking to know my legacy, you have but seen the leaves of a universal tree, too vast for your eyes. May your sight grow and your quest never end”.

As a physician who has been treating patients using ''Ayurvedic proprietary medicenes", well thats one hell of a task( only ayur docs know), other than in the case of emergency( I swear ! well upon a few times well i'v depended upon pain killers in acute cases, hope Dhanwantari will pardon me !) , I do find a need for an elaborative, authentic studies to be held on certain areas in the feild of ayurvedic clinical practise  which must be goal directed.

The first and foremost thing that comes to my mind treating patients with auto immune diseases is the effect of dietary restrictions and prevention of those factors which may hinder with the persons health, which usually the allopathic physicians do not mention in their practise. Most of the ayurvedic physicians know these restrictions or preventions (ofcourse, prevention is better than cure, always!). But considering its importance in bringing about a positive result in the patients health, i wonder why it has not been put to research ? How these changes or rather limitations in foods and other activities, affect or improve a patients metabolism ? The avoidance of sour/salty/pungent foods, curd, potatoes, rhizhomes and leghumes, oily and spicy foods, how it affects with the treatment or why are they being asked to be avoided, considering the fact mentioned above that other physicians dont give such an emphasis for these ''rituals'' ! (ha..ha !)

This science of life mentions a ten fold examination for every patient. They are ennumerated below :
1.Place of residence : may be his disease is due to the geographical influence (dry/sandy/marshy/arid etc...) as is seen in filariasis which is seen in high numbers among the residence of cherthala( a place in kerala, known for marshy back waters, no touring, beware of the female anopheles !) OR due to some socio-economic influence .

2.The Humour : the three humours of wind, bile and phlegm are a physio-anatamico-pathological linking of the body and accordingly every disease must be diagnosed according to the imbalance of one of the three humours.

3.Immunity : the strength of a patient to resist diseases, the strength of the disease graded as mild, moderate and severe etc,.

4.Time : the seasonal vagaries may influence in disease causing.

5.Digestive capacity : almost all diseases affect the persons digestive capacity graded as low/irregular/hyper/optimum.

6.Psychology : of how a patient can take the disease , how much he can tolerate the treatment ? graded as faint hearted/ intermediary / strong.

7.Habits : that which is congenial for the patient, due to long term use since childhood . graded as worse/moderately tolerable/ intolerable and the opposite.

8.Age : the age of the patient and accordingly, child/young/old

9.Nature : divided into eight based on permutation and combination of three humours.

10.Food : what type of foood the patient eats usually ?

The jinx in cracking the code for ayurvedic pharmacology is the compundness and complexity of the hydrocarbons(these are organic dude ) , so nobody dares ! It is better yeilding in terms of results if you treat according to these dracoinan dogmas as these dudes were practical geniuses, they are invincible until now ! Nobody even knows wether Charaka is the real name of the author of "that" text book called charaka samhita ! But there is mention of his name, so no doubt about his existence !

The pulsology known to be propounded by the demon king Ravana himself, who happens to be a legend in his own rights, is another marvel. It is a careful and keen observation and thereby compilation of the minute variations in pulse in various diseases and broadly classifying them into three based on the properties prescribed for the three humours. Just like you differentiate between bradycardia and tachycardia by using the variations in number of beats per minute, pulsology also uses different set of criteria for diagnosis. It is a purely diagnostic tool. The force with which the pulse beats, the fullness of beat, the rythm of beat are all noted. It need continuous observation and experience. The pulse difference which I had noticed in certain type of RA patients(only in RA !) , I call it the "rheumatoid pulse", I have diagnosed two or three patients who where falsely diagnosed for OA, with the R pulse, with elevated RA Factors suggestive of an auto-immune pathology !

Many of the relapses and recurrences that occur in ayurvedic practise is due to the ignorance of a special factor which denotes the decrease in or altered state of metabolic irregularity or toxicity. In such cases which occur in preliminary / acute stages of every auto immune diseases, oil is contra indicated. Most of the ayurvedic institutions use oil in such conditions harming patients health. No body has created or authentified such a criteria which forms the "back bone" of all treatments !

Ayurveda has listed certain aetiological factors responsible for causing that disease, no body is bothered. All chase behind davidsons and harrisons for diabetes and rheumatoid. Should they be reminded to think rationally ? Dont blame ayurveda to be irrational, you are ! Every disease has its own pathology in ayurveda and I dont think anybody is treating on such lines .Certain genetical dispositions in blood, fat tissues, lymph, muscles, bone, marrow, psyche are present at birth resulting in improved functions and better anatomical developmant of such tissues. Only ayurveda has introduced the concept of metabolic pathways which are found imortant for the ayurvedic student, spare the physician.

There is an old saying that comes to my mind, spare the rod spoil the child. On similar lines, i would like to say spare the student spoil the doctor !
